“KALA RATHNA” Dr. Madhavi Mallampalli

Dr Madhavi Mallampalli is an Ayurvedic physician by qualification. Having completed her B. A. M. S at Venkataramana Ayurveda College, Chennai, she went on pursue her M.D (Ay) at Dr. B. R. K. R Govt Ayurveda College, Hyderabad. Kuchipudi exponent and teacher Madhavi was initiated into Bharathanatyam at the tender age of 5, and participated in many classical, semi-classical and folk dances throughout her schooling. It was at age 13 that she was drawn to the captivating and innovative Kuchipudi form of the famed Padmabhushan Dr Vempati Chinna Sathyam and briefly attended the Kuchipudi Dance Academy before having to focus on her medical career and academic progress.

Out of her innate passion for the classical art form of Kuchipudi, she resumed practicing the classical art form under the guidance of Dr Sathyapriya Ramana, who is one of the foremost pupils of Dr Vempati Chinna Sathyam, apart from being a veteran exponent of over 1000 stages and a much sought after Guru on the Kuchipudi dance scenario. Under Dr Sathyapriya’s expert tutelage, she has been performing and winning accolades in some of the foremost dance festivals and sabhas around the country.

Are Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi the same?

No,Though there are lots of similarities in the dance form, costume and presentation, basically Bharatnatyam hails from the Tamilnadu and Kuchipudi, from Andhra Pradesh.

What are the basic differences between Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi?

The hand gestures( mudras), usage of the torso and the footwork, certain features in the costume and hairstyling and ornamentation are some of the differences. Lipsynchronization ( vachika abhinaya)of the lyrics is one of the most perceptible and distinguishing features of Kuchipudi.

Isn't Kuchipudi "the plate dance"?

Though the Tarangam ( dancing on the brass plate) is an integral part of the Kuchipudi repertoire, 80% of the pieces are done without the plate, like all other dance forms.

Who are the famous dancers in Kuchipudi dance?

Vempati China Sathyam, Shobha Naidu, Raja Reddy and Radha Reddy, Yamini Krishnamurthy are some of the foremost pioneers of Kuchipudi dance in India.

Why the name Kuchipudi?

Kuchipudi is the native name of the ancient village Kuchelapuram, now situated in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.

Is Kuchipudi a lucrative career opportunity?

Once one attains mastery over the basic principles, theory and rhythmic as well as lyrical representation in Kuchipudi, there is a broad scope for Kuchipudi as a career. The surge in demand, of late, for teachers, choreographers and performing artists, not only in India, but in the above mentioned countries is very encouraging for those passionate in the art form.

What language are the songs in, for Kuchipudi dance?

While many of the songs are in Telugu and Sanskrit, there is no restriction to choreograph songs of any language in the Kuchipudi style of dance.

isn't Kuchipudi dance drama/ story telling based?

Yes. Initially, Kuchipudi was just Veedhi Bhagavatham, or a street play -style of mythological story telling by groups of dancers. Later, it developed an individual item- based performance by solo dancers.

Is Kuchipudi slow or fast , visually compared to other styles?

The jathis of Kuchipudi are generally observed to be set to a faster pace as compared to other classical forms.

How long does it take to learn Kuchipudi and perform?

The basic steps and Jathis may be covered in the first year. With regular practice under a trained Guru, 4 to 5 years is the average time to reach a mature Performer level.

Where can one learn Kuchipudi?

Reputed teachers with established academies are prevalent in most cities in India, and some other countries like the USA, Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, the U K and some European countries, too. For others, most academies offer online classes and courses at the student' s convenient time.

What is the right age to join Kuchipudi classes?

The norm varies from one dance school to the other but usually they accept at age 5. The upper age limit is not fixed, as it is at the discretion of the teacher and the fitness and ability of the student that are the determination factors.
